November 08-09 Fantasy Basketball Disappointments

November 30, 2008 By: Ongai Category: Fantasy Basketball

We spend lots of time researching and preparing for our fantasy draft day and we were confident that the players we drafted would have great seasons. OK, maybe not great but at least up to par with our expectations. I guess no matter how much you prepare for this and trust the players you drafted you don’t have any control if they suddenly don’t show numbers that are worthy of their respective draft rounds. Here are some of those players who have been a disappointment in the first month of NBA basketball:

Tyrus Thomas

After a fantastic first game where he had his lone double double, he has been a non-factor in the following games. He followed that with 2 games of a combined 2 for 22 shooting. Maybe that should be his nickname – Tyrus “Roller Coaster” Thomas – since he and his stats can go up but go down as fast too.

Amir Johnson

He was the starter for the Pistons for the first seven games but has not delivered. He had a four game stretch without a block which is surprising since you drafted him especially because of his upside in that category.

Andre Iguodala

Having averaged close to 20 points the past two seasons, Iguodala seems to have reverted back to his scoring output in his 1st two seasons in the league where he averaged 9.0 and 12.3 points respectively. A big reason for this drop is his role as the 2nd option of the team behind Elton Brand. The problem here is that it’s not helping their team, which is off to a surprisingly slow start.

Kevin Durant

Let’s see if interim coach Scott Brooks can help Durant and the rest of the Thunder’s play and justify the 4th round pick used by many owners on him. 23.5 ppg on 47.% shooting under his new coach isn’t that bad.

Randy Foye

Before his season high of 23 points and 14 assists against Detroit, Foye was just terrible and wasn’t looking like what most fantasy managers hoped he’d turn out to be. The talk with Coach Randy Wittman worked and hopefully this is a sign for better things to come.

Tyson Chandler

One of the reasons the Hornets were successful last year was because of Tyson Chandler’s rebounding and defense. His blocks are up to 1.5 from 1.1 a year ago but his rebounds are way down to 8.5 a game and he is playing fewer minutes.

J.R. Smith

I thought he was going to produce and hit lots of threes like last season. I also thought he was going to benefit big time from the Iverson-Billups trade but it looks like his back to his old inconsistent ways. Let’s just hope he gets at least 28 minutes a game and at least stay away from George Karl’s doghouse.

Mike Conley

For some reason Mike Conley has digressed from last year’s promising rookie campaign. The arrival of OJ Mayo might have something to do with this but whatever the reason is he just needs to exert more effort and he’ll be a good 2nd point guard on your team. He has two great scorers in Mayo and Gay who can run the floor with him but it looks like he will be traded soon.

Elton Brand

Many people drafted Elton Brand in the 1st round this year but so far his numbers have been discouraging. The rebounds(10.5)  and blocks(1.8) are there but the points and the fg% aren’t. He needs to get things together to save the Sixers and the teams who spent a first round pick on him.

Andray Blatche

When Brendan Haywood went down with an injury, everyone was excited that Blatche would become a solid fantasy option but lately things aren’t looking bright for this kid. As a matter of fact, he stinks literally.

Fantasy Basketball Tips: Know which players to start

Unlike Head to Head leagues, Roto leagues are tougher (in my opinion) since where you will finish will not only be decided by your actions but also the actions of the other managers in your league. Some managers do not play once they see that their team is in the bottom of the league. What they don’t know is that their actions are affecting the rankings of others in your league. Let’s say the top team right now is number 3 in steals while the bottom team is 5th and might have players like Artest, Ronnie Brewer and Allen Iverson but all are stuck in his bench. What if this guy fixed his lineup everyday? Would he be number one in steals and pull down the first team and help you get to top place? There’s also the question, who do you use in your lineup for this week/day? As we know, there are a maximum number of allowed games per position. We want to get the best games out of our players right? (more…)

Steve Nash for VitaminWater

Check out some of Steve Nash’ VitaminWater commercials. Nash, the former MVP and an aspiring filmmaker, said he wrote the ads that had lines like, “I just like to take a big brand, put it on my back, give them a little piggyback ride for a while. See how good they can be,” and “I’m just like you but 10 times better. When you think of MJ, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Me! I know.” (more…)

Why write this blog?

pen and paper picture

There are only 3 reasons why I write this blog:I’m a big fan of basketball, I’m an addict of fantasy basketball and I’d like to help others who are also like me. That’s basically it. Hope we could build a community where we could share our thoughts ideas on the latest trades, signings, and other developments in basketball (NBA, PBA and other leagues around the wolrd). And of course, let’s not forget to talk about fantasy basketball all right?
