Hot Off the Waivers: Players you can pick up

January 19, 2009 By: Ongai Category: Fantasy Basketball, Hot Off The Waivers

This is my first ever Hot Off the Waivers: Players you can pick up section since I wanted to share with you who can help your team especially if you’re in a deeper league. We all know that being active in checking the waiver wires is a key ingredient to success in the fantasy basketball world. I won’t say much now since some of the other managers in your league might be reading this too and you wouldn’t want them beating you to a player right? So here are the hot pick ups you might want to consider for your fantasy basketball team:

Nick Young, PG-SG, Washington Wizards

Nick Young has been scoring the ball lately and with the Wizards’ being last in the East, it looks like Young will get his minutes. He has been playing close to 30 minutes a game the past 5 and it looks like it will stay this way until he cools off. Grab him now if you’re fantasy basketball teams is desperate for points.

Rodney Carney, SG-SF, Minnesota Timberwolves

Carney has been on fire lately by making 11 threes in the last four games. He is stealing the minutes of Rashad McCants, who is clearly distracted. If you need points and threes while Mike Miller finds a way to get his shooting back then Rodney Carney is a good short term pickup.

Sasha Pavlovic, SG-SF, Cleveland Cavaliers

With Delonte West out six weeks with a fractured wrist, Pavlovic is worthy of a look especially in deeper leagues. He scored 19 points with 4 threes in his first start while playing 43 minutes. He won’t average that many points but with minutes like that, it’s hard for you to ignore him.

Jerryd Bayless, PG-SG, Portland Trailblazers

Steve Blake is out for 2 to 4 weeks and this gives Bayless a shot in starting for the Trailblazers. He has been coming of the bench the past two games since Blake’s injury and he has averaged 18.5 points on 66.7% shooting. He hasn’t done much besides shooting but this guy has loads of talent and will be able it in the next couple of weeks.

Sergio Rodriguez, PG, Portland Trailblazers

Another benefactor of Steve Blake’s injury, Rodriguez has been starting for the Blazers the past two games. He is capable of giving you assists but he is getting 20 plus minutes a game now so other stats will increase. If Bayless has been grabbed in your league, Rodriguez is still a safe pick up.

Antoine Wright, SG-SF, Dallas Mavericks

Even if Josh Howard is in their lineup, Antoine Wright continues to start and is given quality minutes. If you need all around stats, some blocks, steals and threes then Wright is worth a look. His fg% is quite low so you better make sure you can take it before picking him up. Nevertheless, he should still continue all around numbers with the minutes given to him.

Jamaal Magloire, C, Miami Heat

Miami hasn’t really got a quality center in their lineup if you don’t include Udonis Haslem who is forced to play that position sometimes so Magloire is given the minutes lately. The former all-star is looking good the past couple of games with increasing minutes. In deeper leagues, he’s worthy of a pickup especially if you need rebounds and blocks and high 40s fg.

Mike James, PG, Washington Wizards

Ever since he was trade to the Wizards, Mike James has been showing why he was given the big contract. Well, he may not deserve it all but at least he’s playing well to deserve starters minutes. Threes, points and assists are what he can give you if you pick him up right now.

Other players worth a look

Carl Landry, Brian Scalabrine, Vladimir Radmanovic, Craig Smith, Daequan Cook, Courtney Lee
