NBA Playoffs 2009: Day 1

April 19, 2009 By: Ongai Category: Playoffs

In the first day of the 2009 NBA Playoffs we saw a lot of firsts. We saw all star point guard Brandon Roy get his first playoff basket. We also saw D-Rose having the poise and leadership to play like a veteran and lead his team to victory. A great game between the Mavericks and the Spurs was also shown where the Mavericks won for the first time on the road in the playoff since 2006.

This isn’t the first for anything for Lebron James but he showed us why he is the King in leading the Cavs to victory against the Pistons. Although, Lebron just loves the first game of the NBA playoffs. Remember when he had a triple double in his first ever playoff game? Here are the highlights from nba.com.

(1) Cleveland Cavaliers VS (8) Detroit Pistons

Cavaliers leads series 1-0

(2) Boston Celtics VS (7) Chicago Bulls

Chicago leads series 1-0

(4) Portland Trailblazers VS (5) Houston Rockets

Houston leads series 1-0

My prediction is that the Blazers will win this series in seven games because they’re younger and right now more athletic. But they’re also inexperienced and it showed in this game that’s why they lost the game, 108-81 in the Rose Garden.

Yao Ming was the key in this game as he went perfect from the field in this game, going 9-9 for 24 points in 24 minutes. Aaron Brooks also chipped in 27 points. As for Portland, it was ugly on their part as only Roy and Oden scored in double figures with 21 and 15 respectively.

“Because this was the first game, and also the first couple of minutes of the first game—the first couple of minutes can set the tone for the game, and the first game can set the tone for the series,” Yao said.”

(3) San Antonio Spurs VS (6) Dallas Mavericks

Dallas leads series 1-0

This was the first road playoff victory of the Mavericks in three years and it was a sweet one as they were beat their rival 105-97. Josh Howard led the Mavs with 25 points as they just stole home court advantage from the Spurs.

“To get a win? Yeah, it’s good to get a win here,” Howard said. “I wouldn’t say steal.”

The Mavericks played really well and deserved this victory. They got a big boost from their bench especially from Barea and Bass.
