Top 10 Fantasy Basketball Disappointments for 2008-2009
Who are the Fantasy Basketball Disappointments for this year?
We’ve just finished listing our top ten fantasy basketball players and we’re here to list the busts or the disappointments. I guess everyone know that the number one should be Elton Brand right? But who should be the other nine? Let’s take a look at them and maybe this could help you solve some of your questions you have for next year’s draft. Yep, fantasy basketball season is about to be over and we can’t wait for the next. So here they are:
1. Elton Brand
No doubt he is the number 1 fantasy bust this year not only to fantasy owners but also to the Philadelphia 76ers who signed him to a big contract last summer. Some may say that the shoulder injury played a big part for him being a disappointment, but even before the injury he wasn’t impressive at all. The 76ers even played better when he went down. Too bad the Clippers aren’t laughing that much now since they also have their own problems.
2. Allen Iverson
Good thing he is off the books of Detroit by the end of the year as he clearly doesn’t blend well with the other Pistons players and looks to be starting a bad relationship with the Coach Curry. He struggled for most of the year and it seems that his best days are over. So much was expected of AI coming into the season after a good full season with the Nuggets last year. It doesn’t look like he’ll be picked in the 1st two rounds of next year’s draft but who knows, this guy is a warrior, he might actually make a comeback for a team that suits him well.
3. Baron Davis
Davis looked fit and ready to go when he signed with the Clippers last summer but things just didn’t go as planned. Elton Brand left and there were a lot of trades that happened during the season. Then injuries struck to him, Camby, and Kaman. You hardly heard his name this year or if there were any, it would be a negative one. He might be distracted with the whole Hollywood thing but I hope he brings his game back next year.
4. Rudy Gay
Last year Gay looked like he was one of the rising stars in the NBA. This year he looked just like a role player who took lots of shots. All of his stats are down except for the turnover category, which increased and we know that’s not a good thing. We’re seeing signs of life lately but that can’t save his season. Blame it on the new coach or in the arrival of OJ Mayo. Whatever the reason is, he didn’t live up to his expectations.
5. Shawn Marion
Marion could have been higher on the list but as early as last year, we already saw glimpses of him not producing well in Miami. Except for his rebounds, he just wasn’t the same Marion we saw in Phoenix. A lot figured that out that’s why he wasn’t in the top 5 anymore. He was still drafted in the first round though but he didn’t deserve to be there so it looks like the days of Marion being one of the top fantasy picks is officially over (unless of course he pairs up with Nash again, which is unlikely).
6. Carlos Boozer
When it comes to injures, he is one of the few players I can’t figure out. When he says he’ll be out for a short period of time it won’t happen because in reality his injury is much serious. I’m sure a lot of fantasy owners were disappointed of Boozer this year with the lack of games and the high draft pick they spent for him just to sit on their bench and wait. He might cash it in again this summer when he opts out so you won’t be seeing him on my team next year. Remember his first year with the Jazz? A disaster.
7. Chris Kaman
After a breakout season last year even with injuries, Kaman’s 2008-2009 went another direction. He was doing well during the start of the season but injuries got in the way and he never really recovered. Ever since coming on March 10 he has just recorded two double doubles while also missing a couple more games. It looks like Kaman is starting to get injury prone so be careful in picking him up next year.
8. Josh Smith
Last summer Josh Smith signed a lucrative deal with the Hawks and you know what happens next. Rarely do we see players giving more after signing a long and huge contract. Could it be an injury, the departure of Josh Childress or whatever? But the main thing is that owners who drafted Smith in the 2nd round aren’t too happy with his career low 1.7 blocks a game. He’s making a comeback lately but it’s too late.
9. Kevin Garnett
I’ve got a lot of respect for Mr. Garnett especially for leading the Celtics to the championships last year. In the fantasy world, however, he won’t be leading your team this year since he’s out. Actually this has been his lowest number of games played in an 82 game season. He’s also averaging his second lowest total in points and third lowest year in rebounds. He’ll be back in the NBA playoff, I just hope he regains some strength and catch some momentum for next year.
10.Marcus Camby
I originally wanted to put Nash here but realized that his stats were saved by Alvin Gentry coaching them so I just went with this guy who has had an un-Camby like year. Or should I say a mix of the old Camby and the player we’ve known the last two years who was a monster on the boards and the blocks. His problem this year really was that the stats were there but the games weren’t. His injuries are real since he just lost his bonuses for not reaching the required games in his contract. I still like this guy for next year but maybe in the 3rd round.
Let me know what you think or if I missed someone that should have been on the list.
