nba playoffs 2009: day 12
After beating the New Orleans Hornets by 58 points in game 4, the Denver Nuggets try to finish the series in game 5. Thanks to Carmelo Anthony’s 34 points, the Nuggets beat the Hornets 107-86.
This is the first time Anthony will advance past the first round in his career and the first time the Denver Nuggets win a series since 1994.
“It took me five years to get that gorilla off my back,” said Anthony, drafted third overall by the Nuggets in 2003 after leading Syracuse to the national title in his only college season. “And it’s a great feeling. I’m just going to soak this time up, this moment.” (yahoo sports)
In the other match up, the Atlanta Hawks beat the Miami Heat 109-91 behind Joe Johnson’s 25 points. This is another blowout win in this series as whoever had the biggest head start in a game usually won big.
This was a very physical game from the start as we saw Dwayne Wade hit his head on the floor in the first half. We also saw Al Horford limp off the court after spraining his right ankle. There were hard fouls and there were also flagrant fouls.
Right now it’s clear that no team likes each other as the Hawks’ Josh Smith tried a between-the-legs windmill dunk late in the game with Atlanta up 20.
Wade and coach Erik Spoelstra were clearly insulted by this.
“We were very insulted by it,” Wade said.
“There at the end it turned into a highlight show. A pickup game highlight reel, really trying to embarrass us,” Spoelstra said. “Now we’ve played five games against each other. I don’t think anybody on either side likes each other anymore.”
It figures to be another rough game 6 as they Heat try to even the series but we hope that this time the game is much closer.
