nba playoffs 2009: day 21

May 11, 2009 By: Ongai Category: Uncategorized

Heading into game three without Jameer Nelson or Rafer Alston, the Orlando Magic looked like a team that would lack leadership with a thin back court. No worries as 34-year old veteran Anthony Johnson did his job to help the Magic win 117-96 to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Of course, the Orlando Magic wasn’t just about the back court, they were more of their one man front court – Dwight Howard. He was everywhere on defense – rebounding and blocking shots. He finished the game with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks.

“Just the whole team stepped up the defensive intensity,” said Howard, the NBA’s defensive player of the year. “It starts with me. I have to do that every night if we want to be successful.”

Kobe Bryant showed the Houston Rockets why they’re the number one team in the Western Conference as they took a 2-1 lead with a 108-94 win. He finished the game with 33 points, 3 blocks and 4 three pointers. None better than the one he hit at the buzzer to end the first quarter.

“I’m just doing what I do best,” Bryant said, “just challenging other teams to try to do something with me. We, as a team, play off of that. It’s on me to be aggressive.”

The Rockets, however, weren’t that aggressive as we saw center Yao Ming limping in the fourth quarter. It was later said that he would miss the rest of the post season with a hair line fracture on his left foot.
