nba playoffs 2009: day 24
The Cleveland Cavaliers just became the first team to go undefeated in the first round since the 2005 Miami Heat. They swept the Detroit Pistons in the first round and they just beat the Hawks 84-74 to sweep the series in the second round.
Lebron James, as usual, was just in another level but this time not in scoring but in getting his teammates involved. He only had 12 points in the first half, which was 10 less than his first half output the other game but the was dishing. He finished the game with 8 assists to go with 8 rebounds but still finished with 27 points.
Mo Williams was a beneficiary of James’ passes as he converted all 12 of his points on three pointers. Delonte West also got in the act as he finished with 21 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds.
The Cavaliers weren’t as dominant as the other games but they were still able to finish when it counted. They’re showing maturity this year and thanks to a deeper bench, Lebron James can rely on them more.
“I’ve got trust in every last one of our guys,” James said.
(1) Cleveland Cavaliers VS (4) Atlanta Hawks
Cavaliers wins series 4-0
(2) Denver Nuggets VS (6) Dallas Mavericks
Denver leads series 3-1
The Denver Nuggets could have ended the series with a sweep but the Dallas Mavericks kept on fighting back. Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs to a 119-117 victory as he outdueled Carmelo Anthony in great matchup.
Nowitzki finished the game with 44 points while Anthony had a career playoff high 41 points.
The two of them were big down the stretch as Nowitzki kept on hitting jumpers while Anthony hit a three to cut the lead to one with 3.1 seconds left. But when Jason Terry missed the free throw, Carmelo Anthony couldn’t throw a 90-foot heave as time expired.
The Mavs, who were robbed in game three after a none call on an intentional foul, have got nothing to lose and they don’t have that much pressure on them compared with the Nuggets who have to win their next game to close the series.
“The pressure is on them to win the series. We don’t have any pressure.” Jason Kidd said.
