nba playoffs 2009: day 26
Everyone knew that the Denver Nuggets were going to be an emotional team coming into game 5 of their series with the Dallas Mavericks. This was after the off court incident between Kenyon Martin’s mom Lydia Moore and Mavs owner Mark Cuban. It was settled as Cuban apologized but the Nuggets had to settle something else. They had to finish the series.
And they did.
They ended the Mavs playoff run in five games by beating them 124-110. It was a sweet win for the Nuggets as they move on the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 1985.
Carmelo Anthony, coming off a 41 point game, led his team with 30 points. Chauncey Billups also had a great game with 28 points, 7 rebounds and 12 assists. The Mavs’ Dirk Nowitzki, who earlier was named to the first team All NBA, finished with a valiant effort of 32 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists.
David Stern must be sweating a little bit now that Denver is in the Conference Finals. Since it looks like the LA Lakers will advance and face them, there’s a chance that the Nuggets could beat them. This would be bad for the NBA, in the eyes of Stern as he has been wanting a Lebron James – Kobe Bryant duel for a long time. Well, a Lebron James – Carmelo Anthony isn’t too bad right? I actually like it.
