Around the NBA: Notes and recap

October 29, 2009 By: Ongai Category: Around the NBA

The wait is over as the first two days of the 2009-2010 NBA season is over and done. We saw strong teams get beaten, players coming back (Mr. Arenas!), rookies who don’t play like one and more and more exciting plays. It’s just exciting isn’t it? So here are some of our thoughts from the first two days.

  • The Cleveland Cavaliers are 0-2 after losing to the Boston Celtics and the Toronto Raptors. Lebron James has been fantastic in the first two games but we still think that their lineup isn’t that strong this year even with Shaq and new addition Anthony Parker around. The Cavs need to get things together or else…
  • Gilbert Arenas is back! We know it’s just one game but if you saw how he played he had thing in control on his way to a 29 point game where he had 9 assists. He didn’t record any assists but he shot well,10-21 from the field. It looks like the 2 years did his body good as he tries to revive his career.
  • We loved Andrew Bynum in his first game where he posted a line of 26 points, 13 rebounds while shooting 9-15 from the field and 8-10 from the line. We have a good feeling that he will stay healthy this year.
  • The Philadelphia 76ers really had a hard time against the Orlando Magic and we don’t like what we’re seeing with Elton Brand. As for Marreese Speights, this guy really looks like he will battle Samuel Dalembert for minutes and he could end up being their starter by December.
  • So much for Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy saying that Dwight Howard can hit close to 75% of his free throw attempts. He started the year going 3-6.

My picks for NBA rookie of the year and the Rookie Teams

Michael Beasley? Russell Westbrook? Brook Lopez? ROY - none of the above

Michael Beasley? Russell Westbrook? Brook Lopez? ROY - none of the above

The NBA playoff is just around the corner and as teams try to win as many games as possible so are the rookies except that they’re focused also on winning something else. They have been battling it out the past few months on who should be part of the All- Rookie teams and who should be this year’s NBA Rookie of the Year.

I must say that this year’s draft featured a lot of future stars in this league and they’ve really proven it with their respective teams. You may argue that some just have stats that are high because their team sucks that’s why we’re here to take a look on who deserves the awards. So here are my picks: (more…)

Lopez brothers and Jeremy Michael Sarver

Lopez Brothers and Sarver

Lopez Brothers and Sarver

For some reason, I find some similarities between Brook Lopez and Jeremy Michael Sarver. So who’s this guy that looks somehow like Lopez? He’s a contestant in this year’s American Idol and works as a roughneck on an oil rig. According to poptower.com, “Sarver auditioned in Phoenix, Arizona.”

Come to think of it, maybe that wasn’t Sarver that auditioned in Phoenix. Maybe it was actually Robin Lopez of the Suns, who is actually the twin brother of Brook Lopez. No wonder Robin Lopez has been seeing lots of DNP-CDs lately. Oh it wasn’t the coach’s decision since he is in Hollywood for American Idol Season 8.

Fantasy Basketball Top 2008 NBA Rookies

Rookie Rankings 1-10 | 11-20 | 21-30

Almost a third of the 2008-2009 NBA season is gone and by now we should be able to find out how our fantasy NBA teams will do come playoff time – if it ever makes it. If your team isn’t doing so well because of injuries to your top players or unproductive role players or maybe drafting big name rookies too high in the draft. One big reason that many teams struggle is because of their rookies on their teams. Some just go by name and don’t really know if they ever produce numbers that justify their fantasy draft positions.

I must admit that I’ve never been a big fan of having rookies in my fantasy basketball teams but I gambled on some even on Greg Oden. I’ve been happy with everyone I’ve picked except for him. The other rookies have really impressed me and have helped some of my teams so far. These rookies have given great value so let’s take a look at my top 10 rookies for this season: (more…)
