nba playoffs 2009: day 13

May 03, 2009 By: Ongai Category: Playoffs

The Boston Celtics-Chicago Bulls series has been one of the best non-finals series in recent years or even of all time as game 6 became a thriller as it went to triple overtime. The Bulls went on to win this game 128-127.

Derrick Rose scored 28 points and blocked Rajon Rondo’s potential game-winner. He also had big help from John Salmons’ 35 points and Brad Miller’s 23 points and 10 rebounds. But the biggest help came when Joakim Noah stole the ball from Paul Pierce and had a go-ahead three-point play. (more…)

Another series is over as the Dallas Mavericks finished off the San Antonio Spurs with a 106-93 win to end the series at 4-1. This win ends streaks for both sides as Dallas advances past the first round for the first time since 2006 while the Spurs are eliminated in the first round for the first time since 2000.

Dwight Howard was just dominant in the Orlando Magic’s 91-78 win over the Philadelphia 76ers to take a 3-2 lead. He had 24 points and a career playoff-high 24 rebounds that led to not only a win but a coaching feud between the two coaches.

Brandon Roy played like a champion as he was really sick and just had to take an IV shot prior to game 5. No problem here as he scored 25 points to lead the Blazers to a 88-77 win to avoid elimination.

“I’ve been involved in games when I didn’t feel well and played well. Some nights when guys come in under the weather they play their best games. And Brandon had one of (more…)

nba playoffs 2009: day 9

April 28, 2009 By: Ongai Category: Playoffs

We have got two teams battling it out against each other and making their series a playoff classic. I’m talking about the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls. It has got to be the most exciting series this year right?

Another series that’s looking really exciting is the one between the Orlando Magic and the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers have won their two games on game winning shots as the Magic are having a hard time closing out games. But in game 4, it looks like the Magic can also hit the game winning shot.

The Houston Rockets and the Portland Trailblazers are also battling it out but it seems that experience is really key in the playoff and the Rockets have a lot of it compared to the young Trailblazers.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Detroit Pistons match up is officially the most boring series this year. Why? (more…)

In Day 4 of the 2009 NBA Playoffs saw an almost 29-point comeback by the Detroit Pistons in the fourth quarter. This was after Lebron James had worn his warmups only to come back in the game to help his team finish the Pistons off 94-82. In the 2nd game, the Utah Jazz played a better game but still lost the game to Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers 119-109. As for the Portland Trailblazers, they finally found a way to win in the playoffs as they beat the Houston Rockets 107-103. (more…)

Rudy Fernandez hospitalized after hard foul by Ariza

March 10, 2009 By: Ongai Category: Basketball Videos

This 2009 NBA season we have seen a myriad of injured – torn ACLs, collapsed lungs and many more and now we have Rudy Fernandez taking a hard fall. As he was on his way to a dunk, the Portland Trailblazers’ guard was fouled by Trevor Ariza, who was slapped with a flagrant foul call and should face a suspension. Fernandez was conscious after but was carried on a stretcher and brought to the hospital. This was precautionary as Fernandez was feeling some chest pains. We just hope that he comes back soon. Speedy recovery Rudy!

Fantasy Basketball: Hot off the waivers

February 26, 2009 By: Ongai Category: Around the NBA, Fantasy Basketball, Hot Off The Waivers

I haven’t been able to update this section lately but all is not too late since there are still a lot of players you can pick up to help your team reach first place or just enough to make to the playoffs. We are down to our last month so it’s important that you play close attention to the waiver wires and fix your roster everyday. So here are some of the fantasy basketball pick ups you may still find.

Chris Andersen, PF-C, Denver Nuggets (22% owned)

With Nene out, Andersen will get the bulk of minutes at the center position and he is a very good source for blocks and rebounds. When Nene comes back, as long as you’re in a deep league you can still hold on to him.

Marreese Speights, C, Philadelphia 76ers (10% owned)

He has been up and down mainly because he is a rookie but if you’re in a deep league you have to have this guy on your roster. Good source of rebounds, blocks and fg%.

Fred Jones, SG, LA Clippers (4% owned)

The Clippers are clearly struggling and they’ve had a hard time having able bodies to play on a nightly basis that’s why journeyman Fred Jones has been given a chance. He has scored double figures in four out of the last five games and is a decent source of threes and steals. Surprisingly, he has been giving a block in three straight.

Kyle Weaver, SG, Oklahoma City Thunder (1% owned)

This guy has been under the radar of most people but he has been producing lately. 45% FG shooting for a guard with a three in the last five out of six games. An all around guy who will give you three rebounds and three assists, a steal and very good ft shooting. Surprisingly, his scoring has been up after the trade for Thabo Sefalosha to the Thunder.

Kurt Thomas, C, San Antonio Spurs (3% owned)

The veteran can still play that’s for sure as he has been playing well of late grabbing rebounds and with that occasional putbacks. The Spurs will try to be cautious with Duncan’s knee as we near the playoffs, Thomas is the only reliable big man off the bench for them. Grab him if you really need help in the boards.

Nicola Batum, SG-SF, Portland Trailblazers (2% owned)

He has been scoring double figures in three out of the last four games and has been hot shooting the three. An all around guy also who will give you steals and an occasional block. But this guy should only be grabbed if you’re in a deep league.

Michael Finley, SG-SF, San Antonio Spurs (14% owned)

He has been hot with the threes lately due to an increase in minutes when Manu Ginobili went down with an injury. He won’t be on fire every night but as long as he is getting minutes the points, threes and occasional steals will keep on flowing. Grab him now!

Brandon Rush, G-F, Indiana Pacers (3% owned)

You knew how he was capable of scoring 20 in a games in December when Dunleavy was out. Now that he is given minutes, it’s also a given that he will score in double figures in most games in the last month of the regular season. Just be sure you can take his 37% fg shooting.

Other players you may pick up:

Goran Dragic, PG, Phoenix Suns – A short term pick up if Nash will be out a little longer.
Antoine Wright, SG, Dallas Mavericks – Grab him if he is still in the waiver wires.
Francisco Elson, C, Milwaukee Bucks – The Bucks are thin at the center position and he’s starting.
Travis Diener, PG, Indiana Pacers – No Granger. No Dunleavy. Ford is in and out of the lineup.
Keyon Dooling, PG, New Jersey Nets – Good source of points and threes.

The crying game with Big Baby

December 09, 2008 By: Ongai Category: Basketball News, Basketball Videos

Glen Davis is one big guy. His nickname is “Big Baby.” He got that when was playing in the peewee leagues. Since he used to play with the older (not necessarily bigger) kids, he would whine at times and the name stuck. He continued his whining and crying in the game against Portland, which can be seen in the video.

With about six minutes left in the game, the Boston Celtics had to bring back their starters after their bench let the Blazers trim their 25 point lead to 13. This led to a timeout where KG gathered his team and had some things – probably nasty – to say to his teammates, especially the bench players. It appeared that Big Baby didn’t want to listen to what KG was trying to say or maybe he just had enough what he heard. I don’t know what was said but that led to Big Baby crying and throwing his towel to the floor.

Is it a big issue that Big Baby cried?

No! Big Baby is an emotional guy. He loves the sport and so does Kevin Garnett. All the starters were out relaxing on the bench when they had to be called to enter the game again. When your mentally out of the game and already icing your knees or ankles, the last thing you want to do is to go back in the game. KG just had to do what he had to do. He plays with a lot of emotions and he wants to really win. If he needs to get into the heads of his teammates, he will. They’re both professionals and KG will try to talk to Big Baby just to follow up on what happened out there.

“I’ll probably get real deep with him,” Garnett said. “Try to understand what he’s going through right now, research the problem. But Baby is frustrated a little bit with some of what we are doing. He just has to understand his role and not come outside of it.”

Maybe Big Baby was just sensitive about what KG said and just got frustrated. He hasn’t had a good sophomore season where he is just averaging 3.6 ppg and 3.9 ppg in 16 minutes a night. What’s worse is that he is shooting just 33.3% from the field and for a big man that is unacceptable. I know that he is just playing back up after a great career at LSU but he will have his chances and I still believe can be a good role player but he needs to grow up fast.

Another thing, it’s just funny how Gabe Pruitt just sits as if nothing was wrong with Big Baby. He has got one good poker face!

After this crying incident, Big Baby has officially carried his nickname to the NBA.
